Tutorial : Digital Painting in Photoshop by lilis-gallery Tutorial : Digital Painting in Photoshop by lilis-gallery
Lately, people have been asking me about how I work, what program/tools/textures/brushes I use for my semi-realistic digital illustrations. So I thought I'd make a detailed tutorial to explain the making of one of these artworks (i.e. the latest illustration in my Race Against Time series, featuring dear Fíli and Kíli who were kind enough to demonstrate). I've always loved reading tutorials made by other artists and find out how they work, so hopefully you guys will like this one too ! (As for me, I had a lot of fun making it.)

I've done my best to explain every step of the process with screenshots and all, but to understand this tutorial, you still need basic Photoshop knowledge. If you've never used Photoshop (or an equivalent program like GIMP or Paint Tool SAI), if you don't know what a layer or a brush is, I'm afraid you will be a little lost here. =)

I hope you'll enjoy it and that it will be useful for some of you (I've added a little bonus at the end : a list of Photoshop keyboard shortcuts. :dummy:) If you have any more questions, ask away (but please read the whole thing first!).

Cool, hope it'll be helpful ! =) I'm using Photoshop CS5.5 (it's written at the beginning of the tutorial). But this technique will work with any (fairly recent) version of Photoshop. Good luck and have fun !

No problem - I do admit there is quite a lot of text in this tutorial, so it's probably easy to miss things

You're very welcome, I'm glad you like it and find it useful ! :hooray: Yeah, I always do my sketches (and lineart) in pencil and black pens. I used to do my linearts in Photoshop but now I much prefer a more traditional technique...

Thank you ! I've been working on shading quite a lot lately, so I'm pleased to hear you like it. ;) Good luck and have fun with Photoshop, it's an amazing program... (Use the shortcuts ! :D)

Thank you SO much for making this!! This is going to be really useful, since my photoshop knowledge is VERY basic :P. It's also great to see an awesome artist who does their stuff in pencil first (because drawing a lineart with a tablet is hard!)
Oh! and I LOVE the way you do the shading! It just looks very natural. (And thanks a million for the bonus shortcuts at the end!)
